Griechenland – Seelenfreundschaft im Outback

How to travel through life

It’s okay to feel lost sometimes.
To stand under the stars, the moon,
the vastness of space.

To let go of all ideas
of how you ’should‘ be.

To toss out the image.
Forget the destination.
Burn the map, the guidebooks,
the tattered ‚How To‘ guides.

To stand there as they burn in the fire.
Let yourself be warmed
and illuminated,
just as you are.

Exhausted, lost, a little frightened,
but fully present in the Unknown.

Your heart is the map now, friend.
Your feet are your guides.
The ‚How To‘ reveals itself
with every step that you take.

Forget the destination.
Forget your lostness.
Let your loneliness burn.
Let yourself be found now:
By the stars, the moon,
the vastness of space.

Von gelebter Seelenfreundschaft im griechischem Outback

ENGLISH VERSION BY MY  DEAREST SISTER IRENE BELOW

„Fly or Die“

In seinem 19.

Becoming soulmates in the middle of the Greek Outback

This story starts, as many stories do, with a singular encounter. While still high above the clouds en route between Berlin and Athens, the Old Yogi says „ You are a person of my life“ with that Greek accent of his. At that point in time we had known each other for two years and were now travelling together for the first time. I really did not know what to make of it. After another week, however, comprehension was finally dawning on me.
This man, whom I have secretly called „an Old Yogi“ all along, takes me along to his home country Greece, where he returns annually. For the past couple of years he has been discovering how to be a Northern German and a father – a transformation that is far from easy. A „real“ yogi, he takes this transformation in his stride with happiness and dedication, as a „real“ yogi would. I accompany him to the Greek Jungle, wherein his soul finds its nurture: friends, coastal breezes, simplicity.

„Fly or Die“
Since he turned 19 he has been following the call of a spiritual way of life, against all conventions. From the age of 27 to the age of 45 he has lived in Canada in a center for meditation, slowly turning into a guru. However: he returned to civilization and our everyday life of conventional madness. He still practices Yoga, everywhere.

Like a loquacious spring bird, the Old Yogi spreads bits of his wisdom wherever he goes. By remarking beauty with eloquence and kindness, he charms a happy wee halo into the eyes of everyone he meets. He does not shy away from telling the truth. Thus, when he speaks Greek, which to my ears usually sounds sweet and melodious, I have to be often reassured that he is not in fact fighting with anyone. He recognizes what is important.

„In the jungle one needs a strong soul“

At an amazing speed of 5km /h (what’s that aprrox. 3 miles an hour) we persuade the citycarlady to take us as far as possible into the mountains of Pilion, where Giorgosch awaits us. He already lived here as a true „hermit“ before the existence of the bumpy „roads“ – which are actually fire protection forest aisles for tanks. A few years ago, Giorgosch defeated the flames not far from his existence. He says it felt good; alive. Even heavy injuries will be self -treated or -stiched if necessary. Giorgosch still lives alone.

One day a woman, an acquaintance of some of Giorgosch’s friends, came by for a visit – and remained. This just happened. It is thanks to Angelica that the absolute non-contact between out-backers and villagers has turned into a cordial exchange. In order to allow her daughter to grow up in a socially stimulating environment, Angelica later moves with the then 5-year-old to the village and (one year ago) on to Athens. This too just happens, naturally and without bitterness. So I get to know both of them only through stories; and yet Angelica’s influence is still palpable and omnipresent.

We arrive with nothing and yet are given of everything. Giorgosch’s house is very cozy. It smells of dried herbs and freshly baked bread, which every morning we sprinkle with the most aromatic mountain honey. The essence of his knowledge on wild herbs is kept in small brown vials. I would describe Giorgosch as a cross between druid and Robinson Crusoe. I’m not at all surprised to find a magic potion among his stores: the Bloody GoGo on the rocks. Delicious!

Furthermore, I am even less surprised when our smoking tobacco is mingled with interesting things. It makes me smile inwardly, when I am shown a treasure map for the secret location of what are almost certainly hidden gold bars. Later, as we visit the oldest church ruins in the area, we actually do come across some elaborately drilled holes in the ground.

“Nature is the ultimate temple”

In the evening we join a boisterously exuberant dinner party. And, surprise surprise: we find ourselves in the company of an Idefix – who in this case is an enormous breed of dog. From afar, we can hear Giannis playing the bagpipes. He and Giorgosch are among the first inhabitants of this pilionese wilderness.

In 2005 Giannis arrived with nothing, when he acquired a house that was already over a hundred years old. Encompassed by untamed vegetation, it is wildly and intimately bound to nature. The wooden house looks crooked and dwarfish. We have to double over in order to get to the railings on the covered terrace and I have serious concerns about the thin wooden boards carrying my weight. However, lying in a hammock, enjoying freshly picked cherries and overlooking the wide open sea, I forget all my worries.

Giannis‘ parents visit him regularly and support his radical way of life. This gives him great cause for gratitude and supports him during the occasional hour of quietude and loneliness. For example, over the last couple of years they gave him his car as a permanent loan, so that he is not solely dependent on his horse. The black, free-roaming beauty with the white star reminds me of Bukephalos, the most famous horse in ancient history. What touches me most about this legend, be it true or idealized, is the faithful relationship between two courageous souls who face all challenges together.

I asked Giannis whether he and his sweetheart from the neighboring village are planning to have children on day. A dark cloud passes the face of this usually joyful musician, sensitive animal keeper and hearty-dreamy friend, when he expresses his hopelessness regarding the future of the earth. I am taken to and shown around wonderful, remote places – the omnipresent plastic serving as a reminder of the life back home.

Farewell – feeling like a beautiful and sad Diva like in italien classic movie

This journey revives feelings of freedom and carefreeness; my wings are spreading, my soul is singing. The people and animals striving unaffectedly all around me replenish my energy. Everything evolves naturally. I do not understand the ever occurring heated discussions (in Greece) but I do enjoy just observing the speakers eyes. They are extraordinary, alert, sparkling.

The days pass by seemingly unscheduled (excepting the mornings, when I am woken by gentle yet insistent bird song) Nevertheless, I did eventually have to return to life in good old Leipzig. I am not yet sure, how that transition happened precisely. The first days back, are filled with a certain melancholia, a longing for withdrawal and the memory of that beautiful feeling a natural life style brings with it.
